Northern Assignment
This 10 minute short was a joy to make. We knew from the outset we needed to create an intimate space for our actors to work. We wanted to compress this story into a small space, creating a claustrophobic feel to tell this story. Two rehearsal days were booked to work with the actors, allowing them to connect with the script, treating it almost like a stage play. We knew we had a lot of pages to shoot so long, uninterrupted takes were crucial.
Stephanie Arsoska (intimacy coordinator) join the rehearsals to work with Imogen and Neil as we wanted a safe space for them to have the freedom to explore the dynamics between their characters. This really helped bring the characters closer, especially in the last third of the film.
Our actors, Imogen Mackie Walker and Neil Pendleton really embraced the characters. Having a good amount of rehearsal time gave them the freedom to work with director Tom Callander and writer Ben Robert Cunningham to find the right balance and tone for the film.

We shot this day for night in the village of Drem outside Edinburgh. Our DoP Conor Rotherham did an incredible job shooting at this location. Low ceilings, shooting day for night and a small room meant he had to come up with creative ways to light and shoot this short.
